Mike, thanks for the thoughtful e-mail. I, along with a team of folks) are working on expanding a current JK-8 school to include a High School. We open 9th grade in a year from now. Your point about great questions comes at a time where I am personally trying to ask more and more powerful questions to get to the heart of what school is about. I can't help but share a valuable resource that I have come to rely on that came via a colleague, and that is "The Art of Powerful Questions" by Vogt, Brown and Isaacs. It is a short article available via the World Cafe site as a PDF: http://www.theworldcafe.com/pdfs/aopq.pdf.

It encourages a constant revisioning questions to make them more and more powerful. This "power" allows the person asking to take the issue farther without limiting the view. A simple training for teachers and/or students could create a vision of the kind of thinking we want in all of our community members.

There are big questions to be answered, and there are small tools to use to help us along the way. I'd put "The Art of Powerful Questions" in the essential tools category.

Looking forward to discussing this more,
