Dear friends of Experimental Intermedia,
We did it – well, actually YOU did it !!! We saved the DATs !!!. Thanks to your generous contributions, EIF raised enough money to transfer the DAT recordings from 20+ years of events to digital files. The process is in fact almost done (at this writing DATs 251 to 400 have been picked up by our amazing engineer Garry Rindfuss and are being transferred).
So EIF greatly thanks all of you who helped and expressed their understanding of the need for this process to go forward !
We would especially like to recognize a major benefactor to our digitization process: Mr Les Shimmin from Sydney, Australia. Mr. Shimmin, who passed away in 2024 and his son, Nick Shimmin, who agreed to use a portion of his estate to promote experimental music and art. Indeed, after occasional meetings with Phill Niblock over the last 15 years, Nick understood the importance of the digitization of the EI DAT recordings. Many thanks on behalf of Experimental Intermedia, and all the musicians and composers who are assisted by this generous donation, we thank you for this show of support for our efforts.
Nick has also asked that we mention his recently opened new experimental arts venue in Sydney, The Red House, and anyone visiting Australia who is interested in performing or exhibiting there should contact him at duxextra@gmail.com

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Elaine Summers (1925 – 2014) was an American choreographer,
experimental filmmaker, and intermedia pioneer. She was a founding
member of the original workshop-group that would form the Judson
Dance Theater and she significantly contributed to the interaction of
film and dance, as well as the expansion of dance into other related
disciplines, such as visual art, film, and theater. She fostered the
expansion of performing dance in new, often outdoor locations. Her
movement approach Kinetic Awareness offers a comprehensive
perspective on human movement and dance. In 1968 Summers founded the
non-profit Experimental Intermedia (The Elaine Summers Experimental
Intermedia Foundation) to provide organizational support for artists
working in intermedia forms.

Katherine Liberovskaya is a Canadian intermedia artist based in NYC.
Involved in experimental video since the 80’s, she has produced
numerous single-channel video art pieces, video installations and
video performances, as well as works in other media, that have been
shown around the world. Since 2001 her work predominantly focuses on
the intersection of moving image with sound/music in various both
ephemeral and fixed forms (projections, installations, performances),
notably through collaborations with many composers and sound artists
in improvised live video+sound concert situations where her live
visuals seek to create improvisatory “music” for the eyes. For
over 22 years she collaborated with composer/intermedia artist Phill
Niblock on various live, video and installation projects. Other
frequent collaborators include: Dafna Naphtali, Keiko Uenishi,
Shelley Hirsch, Barbara Held, Mia Zabelka, Al Margolis (IF,BWANA),
David Watson, among many others. In addition to her art work she
curates events in experimental video/film, sound/music and A/V
performance, notably the yearly Screen Compositions evenings at EI
NYC since 2005 and, since 2006 the OptoSonic Tea salons (co-curated
with Ursula Scherrer) in NYC and various nomadic locations in North
America and Europe as well as on-line during the Covid pandemic. In
2014 she completed a PhD in art practice entitled “Improvisatory
Live Visuals: Playing Images Like a Musical Instrument” at the
Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She is currently the
artistic director of Experimental Intermedia NYC.
Phill Niblock (1933-2024) was an intermedia artist using music, film,
photography, video and computers. He was born in Indiana in 1933.
Since the mid-60’s he was making music and intermedia performances
which have been shown at numerous venues around the world. He made
thick, loud drones of music, filled with microtones of instrumental
timbres generating many other tones in the performance space. He
said: “What I am doing with my music is to produce something
without rhythm or melody, by using many microtones that cause
movements very, very slowly.” Simultaneously, he would present
films / videos looking at the movement of people working. Since 1985,
he was the director of the Experimental Intermedia Foundation in New
York – www.experimentalintermedia.org – where he had been an
artist/member since 1968. He was the producer of Music and Intermedia
presentations at EI from 1973 to 2023 and the curator of EI’s XI
Records label until 2023. Phill Niblock’s music is available on the
XI, Moikai, Mode, Matiere Memoire, Room 40, and Touch labels. DVDs of
films and music are available on the Extreme label and Von Archive.
Until 1995 he was a professor of film, video and photography at The
College of Staten Island, the City University of New York. In 2014,
he was the recipient of the prestigious John Cage Award from the
Foundation for Contemporary Arts. www.phillniblock.com
Experimental Intermedia Foundation NYC is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization was directed from1985 to 2023 by Phill Niblock. Its
current artist director is Katherine Liberovskaya. It was founded in
1968 by Elaine Summers to provide organizational support for artists
working in intermedia forms. It has been presenting experimental
music concerts and other intermedia work at its SOHO location since
1973, featuring both American and international composers and
artists. Experimental Intermedia remains one of the principal venues
for the presentation of untried work in New York City. The Foundation
also manages its own recording label, XI Records, that continues to
garner extremely positive press and radio coverage, both nationally
and internationally. To date, the label has released 50 recordings, a
majority of which are by American composers. EI produces some 20
events each season and develops and implements international projects
in collaboration with like-minded organizations both local and
international for the creation & presentation of innovative,
technically sophisticated music & intermedia artwork.
