A presentation of a new memoir, and a conversation about those days past when rents were low and bohemia lived.

The book is Alan W. Moore, Art Worker: Doing Time in the New York Artworld
Designed by Lamm & Kirch for JoAAP, Leipzig 2022

From a wet-behind-the-ears art critic in 1974 to a precarious academic 25 years later, this memoir charts some 30 years
in New York City’s art world. The book casts a raking light on a classic period in cultural history – the ‘70s and ‘80s in
downtown Manhattan. Moore lived through NYC’s changing scenes – sedate Soho, video art TV, No Wave punk, hip-hop,
squatter riots, and the shows and places that broke the multi-cultural art world of today.

The author wrote for art journals, then joined the artists’ group Colab. Colab organized the Real Estate Show,
Times Square Show, and the MWF Video Club, and spun off several art stars. Moore was in on all of it, meanwhile working
for the scene monthly East Village Eye. In 2000 he limped back to grad school, and took a PhD.

He is the author of Art Gangs and Occupation Culture .
