*NEW YORK, NY (October 12, 2012)*—*RE/MIXED MEDIA* is pleased to announce
the start of ticket sales for the *2012 RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL*, taking
place Saturday, November 10, 2012 at the Brooklyn Lyceum. Tickets are $8
and available at www.remixnyc.com.
The *2012 RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL* features an exciting mix of work across
and within a variety of disciplines. The festival will feature film and
video screenings, panel discussions, theatrical presentations, musical
performances, visual and audio installations, live painting, and even a
wine tasting. Taking up the entirety of the massive Brooklyn Lyceum space, *the
2012 RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL* builds on the success of the previous two
festivals, and promises to spark lively discussions about remix in all
forms of art.
This year, *RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL* is proud to announce its partnership
with the *MAshRome Film Festival (mashrome.org)* in Rome, Italy. MAshRome
Film Fest is the first festival in Italy dedicated to mash up and remix.
MAshRome will presents *Archet-Hip-Hop, The Greek Theatre In Remix*.
Described as Greek theatre meets contemporary arts, the performance mixes
theatre, cinema, music, and dance mixed all together on the same stage, to
give life to a new language. *Archet-Hip-Hop, The Greek Theatre In Remix *is
an experimental retelling of Paolo Pasolini's 1969 film *Medea*, creating a
unique retelling of the classic greek tragedy.
MAshRome Film Fest winner *Alice in Popland* will also be screened, along
with a number of other MAshRome Festival films.
This year’s exciting line-up also includes:
· *Where Classics and Cartoons Collide *Comic book artist* R. Sikoryak
* will present a reading and slide show from his book, *Masterpiece
Comics*(Drawn and Quarterly). His comics adapt literary classics in
the styles of
famous cartoons. He will also perform one of his live action paintings.
· *Keynote address: The Framework of Culture, Remix, and
Literature*Cultural analyst Eduardo Navas will discuss his research on
how the
recycling of material, as currently understood in terms of remix, is at
play in literary practice in relation to a feedback loop which forms The
Framework of Culture. Navas is the author *of **Remix Theory:** **The
Aesthetics of Sampling**.*
· *Remix in Literature panel discussion* including literary critic *Ed
Champion*, author *Jonathan Ames* (*Bored to Death, What’s Not to
Love?)*and media theorist
*McKenzie Wark* *(A Hacker Manifesto, Gamer Theory*), *moderated by Miriam
Aziz. *A remix in literature can be as simple as an alternative version of
a text or as complex as cut-ups, literary collages, or multimedia
retellings of literary works. R remix in literature has a history as long
as that of literature itself. Nearly all of Shakespeare’s plots were
“borrowed” (i.e. repurposed, retold, remixed) from other sources. In the
1920s, Tristan Tzara advocated a Dadaist poetry-writing technique of
cutting up newspapers and rearranging the pieces. In the 1950s, the
Situationist International (SI) developed the technique of détournement in
which entire novels were cut up and recontextualized in order to turn media
and capitalist culture against itself. William Burroughs used Bryon
Gysin’s cut-up technique to remix language in the 60s. The tools of today’s
digital culture makes it easy for artists to sample and manipulate selected
source material through their own theoretical and artistic filters, with
the resulting explosion of creativity engendering accusations of piracy and
plagiarism.
· * Radioactive City screening.* *Radioactive City** *(2011) is a
diaristic and experimental documentary about Los Angeles during the Spring
and Summer of 2011. Some of the imagery, and most of the film’s soundscape
was appropriated from radio broadcasts, and from museum film screenings.
The Fukushima disaster and an incident of sports violence at Dodger Stadium
are the main focal points of the film. *Richard Sandler* is a documentary
filmmaker and a still photographer; his films include, *The Gods of Times
Square* (1999), *Brave New York* (2004), *Sway* (2006), and *AKA Martha’s
Vineyard* (in post-production), for which he was awarded a Guggenheim
fellowship in 2006.
· *Perfomance by S.T.D*. is a new super-group featuring Cecil Sinclair
(S), Jason Trachtenburg (T), and Matt Dallow (D) – a revolutionary,
multi-media, educational film-strip, musical comedy extravaganza.
· *Performance by* *Tessa Makes Love* is a NYC band fronted by
Russian-born, classically trained pianist and singer Tessa Lena who at one
time FBI thought was Russian spy. Their sound has been compared to David
Bowie, Tom Waits, Kate Bush and Diamanda Galas.. Tess Lena will be joined
by Ian McDonald, a co-founding member of King Crimson and Foreigner.
The *RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL* explores the art of remix. Digital technology
has empowered artists and consumers alike to access media creation tools
that were previously limited to professionals. The result is an explosion
of creativity—of remix, user-generated content, and art that pushes the
limits of copyright and tinkers with the premise of intellectual
property. Founded
in 2010, the *RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL* aims to bring public awareness and
generate conversation around the vibrant art and practice of remix. The
first festival in 2010 was a huge success where festival goers enjoyed
appearances by Moby, Steinski, Ricky Powell, Sweatshoppe, Deanna Zandt,
Jesper Juul, and over 50 other artists, performers, musicians and DJs. In
2011, over one thousand attendees packed into One Arm Red and the
Underwater Lounge in DUMBO to enjoy more live performance, music, film and
panel discussions on critical issues related to remix, sampling and
creative appropriation.
