Founded by four Bard College students this year, selfportrait.net is an
online social networking site for artists, and database for galleries,
curators, collectors, and the art press.  The site allows artists to sell
artwork of any artistic medium directly from their profile pages.  Galleries
can also sell back catalogues.  Represented selfportrait artists, culled
from the site, are shown in the Marketplace, as well as in real world art
shows.  Vito Schnabel is head curator for these multimedia exhibitions at
edgy and nontraditional spaces.  The site hosts about 20,000 members, and
caters to a young, hip, demographic of aspiring and established artists and
art enthusiasts, rife with spending power.  The site has the potential to
supplant traditional galleries and the buyer/seller dynamic.
