To add my thoughts to this digital Quaker's meeting:

When I started teaching digital media in the Inter-Arts Center at San Francisco State in the early 90s, there were faculty in other departments who became apprehensive, territorial and sometimes even hostile to a creative field that threatened to collapse department boundaries and challenge well-established fiefdoms. Steve Wilson, on the other hand, was always genuinely welcoming, friendly and excited to talk about the future of media and the arts. I have fond memories of him sitting around the table with myself and other members of the Computer Advisory Committee, as he munched on his carrots and shared ideas. He was a warm, cheerful person with a lot of humility. We will miss him.

Over the years we developed an important friendship and professional relationship. Steve often described art as being necessarily responsible as a guardian of the cultural frontier. Whether one agreed or disagreed, Steve was firmly committed to the promotion of research, artistic experimentation and the challenges of transdisciplinary artistic practice. He will be sorely missed.
