My name is Matthew Tiessen and I'm an an Assistant Professor in the School
of Professional Communication (ProCom) in the Faculty of Communication and
Design (FCAD) at Ryerson University (Toronto). I'm also a Research
Associate at Ryersons's Infoscape Research Lab: Centre for the Study of
Social Media (founded and directed by Dr. Greg Elmer).
These days, with the help of a SSHRC Insight Development Grant, I'm doing
research that critically focuses on the ways mobile screen-based
technologies are increasingly being used by governments, corporations, and
professional organizations to develop algorithmically driven "gamification"
and "ubiquitous computing" logics and platforms designed to add digitally
enhanced "achievement layers" to everyday activities. My research and
publishing also focuses on visual communication and design, affect and
aesthetic theory, and critical information studies.
Previously, from 2011-13, I completed a SSHRC Postdoctoral Research
Fellowship at Ryerson's Infoscape Research Lab: Centre for the Study of
Social Media on "high frequency trading" and the new nodes of profit.
I'm looking forward to meeting everyone in NYC soon!
