
<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=windows-1252"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; ">Honored to be part of the civic hacking panel with Carl, Melissa, Thomas, Lilly & Max. I'm a Ph.D candidate at the University of Southern California. My work draws on communication and sociology, and broadly considers relationships between technology and social cohesion. <br><br>Over the last 3 years I've looked at how my primary interests intersect with the popular expansion of hacking. My initial focus was on hacker and maker spaces, which led to my actively running hackathons and leading courses focused on student software projects. This merged into a 1.2m Blackstone launchpad grant at USC and related maker space initiative at the Annenberg school. <br><br>Starting a year ago I started shifting attention to the emergence of civic hacking and open data. My current theoretical and methodological inroad is communication in this emergent infrastructure among both established (corporate partners, government entities) and new players (e.g. code for america) in Southern California, where open data has been embraced by various municipalities. On one hand it raises questions of how we think about civic engagement, on the other, outcomes at various levels, from how labor of residents is recognized to desires of governments for more effective public-facing communication strategies. <br><br>Looking forward to the discussion in the fall! <br><br>best<br>Andrew<br><div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"><br>Andrew Schrock<br>USC Annenberg Doctoral Candidate<br><a href="mailto:aschrock@usc.edu">aschrock@usc.edu</a><br>714.330.6545</div>

<div><br></div><div>The last few years I have been following what we call issue-oriented hackathons. If you are unfamiliar with these events, they are intensive 1 to 3 day events where groups form to develop (largely software) prototypes related to contemporary matters-of-concern, such as agriculture, ecological issues, and so on. The events often take a civic slant, such as the National Day of Civic Hacking, which construct technology hobbyists and professionals into a form of volunteer civic labor (though more imagined than realized even at events where work is being done). Needless to say, you'll be hearing more about this in November.</div>
