Just chiming in again to say that people are hitting it on the head -
the cart leading the horse is a big issue, when you look at the cart
(machine/technology) leading the horse (being/organism).  As artists,
critics, scholars, etc who work with these things, of course the
McLuhanite idea of exploring the current as futurist holds very true to
us.  But on the other hand, one must watch out for being blindly pulled
along by the interests of state, military, and private sector agendas of
power which often define the shape of technology.  

It's great to see what the new technologies can do, but on the other
hand, one often fails to examine the modes of operation and the
socioeconomic/ideological infrastructures which allow those technologies
to exist.
