Hi Tony -
It's interesting to consider the intended vision for Sesame Street as
opposed to the way it was actually rolled out. When it was first
broadcast, CTW (children's television workshop) created workbooks and
educational kits intended to be used by kids watching the show from
home. There was also a weekly 30 minute evening television show
designed to teach parents and caregivers how to watch sesame street
together with their kids. The network stopped producing and
distributing the workbook and the evening companion show because it
wasn't cost effective. The problem doesn't lie with the linear based
medium of television - only with the way in which we use it. (And of
course with the way in which the business of television has dictated
what is possible.)
I would argue that the type of interactivity that is available through
most internet educational sites is only superficially interactive. To
click through for the predetermined answers is analogous to learning
from a friend who literally knows it all. The space to make mistakes,
reflect, reiterate and learn is missing from most of our online
experience.
As for the child prodigies, I see a direct relation between the
increasing number of children diagnosed with anxiety disorders and
child prodigies. As the boundaries of literacy deteriorate and
children are able to understand and literally 'see' what is expected
of them on the news or through internet clips, they assume
responsibilities that they cannot fully process.
