Dear all, I like SubmaP also... Should we get http://submap.br and-- SubmaP is a collaborative project that aims to map Sao Paulo using a cartography that puts class and gender on the map. It's not just a map to get you from A to B-- it's a map that can be reconfigured by its users. We draw different lines, a subjective map of this metropolis: a map of unheard histories, of unknown places, a map of our own, your grandmother´s map, the worker´s map, a common people´s map, a people´s map. Another cartography, a different history, a map that is shaped by its users. "The starting point of critical elaboration is the consciousness of what one really is and "knowing thyself" is a product of the historical process to date which has deposited in you an infinity of traces, without leaving an inventory. Such an inventory must therefore be made at the outset." A. I started: Submap is a project of a different mapping of Sao Paulo. Another map, a subjective map of this big city: a map of unknown histories, of unknown places, a map of your won, your grandmother´s map, the worker´s map, a common people´s map, a commom peole´s history map. I think everybody should vote for one only and then we decide by the majority, what do you think? Second: we urgently need to write down a proposal or peoject plan. Does anybody already want to start it? I can just have more time to do that on Monday... Sérgio, is there any possibility of scanning your map, puttting it in the web and such, to send Trebor and the orthers? Hello Trebor and friends, I'm Mila and I expect being with you in this work. I would like to frame the town center as a working area, like Arthur. I'm deeply interested in relations and neighboorhood created between 'oficial' inhabitants of the old center and the homeless people who ocupy it pointing different ways of living - fragile and instable forms, subversive use of the public equipaments, etc. But once the focus is on the relations and its complexity, I believe that the resulting graffic would not point dots on the map, but blurred zones around dots on the map. As written by Ignasi de Solá-Morales, when talking about architecture's critical role, criticism today can undertake the production of maps or descriptions wich, like topographical charts, reveal the complexity of a territory... And for the purpose or use of the SPMAP? we are going to build, I'll talk trough the same author: Criticism is thus not the recognition or manifestation of branches but is itself a construct, purposefully produced to cast light on that situation, as a means of drawing the topography of that point where a certain architecture has been produced. Sorry for my poor english and I hope my friends can give me a helping hand when I have to write in portuguese.

I agree with Trebor: "Subjective_maPping" is great specially if we think about the "submap" idea. because, we are not interested in official carthographies, we are looking for alternatives maps. SubmaP is also interesting. this "SP" situation is only suggested here. I would suggest also "Interstitial Maps". Maps made in the interstices between routes and stoppings, between derives and paths. Name and Proposal

Hello everybody, Trebor, Sergio, Artur, Lucas, Lucia and others who enter, as you all know, we set up this list to think about the project for this map use here in Sao Paulo. Lots of things should be discussed here, once we´re doing all this though Sao Paulo- New York. We can talk here both in English and Portuguese. So, we have some urgent things to talk about and decide. First thing is a name. A tittle for the project. A name that works both for the Brazilian and the American audience. We´re open for sugestions and this list serve for this, amongst other things. So think bout names and suggest here. I´ll give some I have thought. Pervasive and Locative Arts Network (PLAN)

Pervasive and Locative Arts Network (PLAN) http://open-plan.org/ A new international and interdisciplinary research network in pervasive media and locative media has been funded as part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Culture & Creativity programme. The network will bring together practicing artists, technology developers and ethnographers with the aim of advancing interdisciplinary understanding and building consortia for future collaborative projects. It will be of relevance to people working in the arts, games, education, tourism, heritage, science and engineering. The network will stage three major gatherings. Each gathering will have a distinct form and focus: an initial workshop to launch the network and assess the state of the art; a technology summer camp for artists and technologists, including hands-on prototyping sessions using the facilities at Nottingham's Mixed reality Laboratory; and a major public conference and participatory exhibition as a central component of the Futuresonic 2006 festival in Manchester; as well as a supporting web site and other resources.

Ubiquitous computing

Ubiquitous computing (ubicomp, or sometimes ubiqcomp) integrates computation into the environment, rather than having computers which are distinct objects. Another term for ubiquitous computing is pervasive computing. Promoters of this idea hope that embedding computation into the environment would enable people to move around and interact with computers more naturally than they currently do. One of the goals of ubiquitous computing is to enable devices to sense changes in their environment and to automatically adapt and act based on these changes based on user needs and preferences. Some simple examples of this type of behavior include GPS-equipped automobiles that give interactive driving directions and RFID store checkout systems.
