Dear all, Sergio's map of Sao Paolo arrived yesterday. Thanks very much! We took the first step of the title: SubmaP. Looking at the overwhelming size of Sao Paolo on the map I wonder if it'd may be best to start with two areas: Central and East. But I remember Lucia wanting to map an area in which her research took place in order to visualize it. So maybe other areas would have to be the beginning. But indeed a selection of two or three areas may be best. It was important to me that not all areas that we map are usually represented by the tourist board. So, it'd be good to map underprivileged areas that are usually overlooked, left out. To be able to start - it'd be good to see who is on board and ready to start working on it. Then we could make a list of tasks and work on a realistic production timeline. Lucia mentioned the two programmers who are at her university and who may want to get involved and then all of us... Maybe we can bring everybody together for a meeting as Ricardo suggests. We could use the map Sergio sent and use the Central area. We'd use this large map, put tracing paper on top of the map and specify The locations that we think are crucial to our subjective map of Sao Paolo. We could also identify the points in the city that are important to our view of it by not using the actual map first but by just drawing an imaginary map-- a map of Central as it appears in our mind-- which may consist of homeless shelters or houses of friends, the telecentros, or a bench in the park. You'd identify what you would want to put on a map-- which locations. In the end we need these locations as precise dots on tracing paper of the map. Each dot needs to be numbered. In a legend you'd write what these dots stand for (ie. homeless shelter, university, comum lab, club x). The map then needs to be scaled down to a size that is useable for the web. The dots are associated with x y coordinates on the map. The x y coordinates are associated with addresses. I'd be curious how your map of Sao Paolo will differ from the ones in the stores. For the East it'd be interesting to map areas that a tourist office would never want you to go... So far a few thoughts on how this project could move on... What do you think? Best, Trebor

hi artur, sergio, I am good also with a defined group. I suggested guidelines for development stepson december 16 http://distributedcreativity.typepad.com/submap/ I still think we should adhere to them and go through the points there. There are few resources needed as this point as lucia had programmers available. That's the only expense that I can see for now. Of course later a grant would help. We can develop this in parallels. what do you think? trebor --

Happy New Year to you all, SubmaP is fine with me also. I translated the Portguese posts with Google- it works quite well. As for the decision of who joins I wonder if it's necessary to limit it. We could have a large discussion group and I think the people who dedicate themselves to actually build it will be limited anyway. I would include all who are interested in developing this. Can we agree on a time plan-- to list who will do what and in which time frame... best, Trebor

Dear all, I like SubmaP also... Should we get http://submap.br and-- SubmaP is a collaborative project that aims to map Sao Paulo using a cartography that puts class and gender on the map. It's not just a map to get you from A to B-- it's a map that can be reconfigured by its users. We draw different lines, a subjective map of this metropolis: a map of unheard histories, of unknown places, a map of our own, your grandmother´s map, the worker´s map, a common people´s map, a people´s map. Another cartography, a different history, a map that is shaped by its users. "The starting point of critical elaboration is the consciousness of what one really is and "knowing thyself" is a product of the historical process to date which has deposited in you an infinity of traces, without leaving an inventory. Such an inventory must therefore be made at the outset." A. I started: Submap is a project of a different mapping of Sao Paulo. Another map, a subjective map of this big city: a map of unknown histories, of unknown places, a map of your won, your grandmother´s map, the worker´s map, a common people´s map, a commom peole´s history map. I think everybody should vote for one only and then we decide by the majority, what do you think? Second: we urgently need to write down a proposal or peoject plan. Does anybody already want to start it? I can just have more time to do that on Monday... Sérgio, is there any possibility of scanning your map, puttting it in the web and such, to send Trebor and the orthers? Hello Trebor and friends, I'm Mila and I expect being with you in this work. I would like to frame the town center as a working area, like Arthur. I'm deeply interested in relations and neighboorhood created between 'oficial' inhabitants of the old center and the homeless people who ocupy it pointing different ways of living - fragile and instable forms, subversive use of the public equipaments, etc. But once the focus is on the relations and its complexity, I believe that the resulting graffic would not point dots on the map, but blurred zones around dots on the map. As written by Ignasi de Solá-Morales, when talking about architecture's critical role, criticism today can undertake the production of maps or descriptions wich, like topographical charts, reveal the complexity of a territory... And for the purpose or use of the SPMAP? we are going to build, I'll talk trough the same author: Criticism is thus not the recognition or manifestation of branches but is itself a construct, purposefully produced to cast light on that situation, as a means of drawing the topography of that point where a certain architecture has been produced. Sorry for my poor english and I hope my friends can give me a helping hand when I have to write in portuguese.
